03 Jun Informing the future of food system in Aotearoa: Workshop highlights
A recently released report brings together insights from two national-level stakeholder workshops held as part of the Kai Anamata mō Aotearoa (KAMA) research programme. KAMA is multi-organisation initiative exploring future food system scenarios and their potential impacts across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Held in mid-2024, the workshops brought together a wide cross-section of participants, including government representatives, researchers, food sector professionals, and community groups. Through facilitated discussions and a follow-up survey, attendees explored the biggest challenges facing Aotearoa’s food system, the types of future scenarios worth modelling, and the outcomes that matter most for guiding food system decisions.
Recurring themes included the urgency of addressing climate and environmental pressures, improving food affordability and access, strengthening supply chain resilience, and embedding long-term thinking into food system planning. Participants also stressed the importance of reflecting diverse perspectives, including mātauranga Māori and community-level knowledge, when developing future strategies.
Insights gathered during the workshops are informing the continued development of a national food system model. This model is designed to help decision-makers test and compare the potential consequences of different policy directions, environmental changes, and economic developments in a systems-based framework.
